Getting home was a more painful experience than Sara had expected. Her body was sore, but not in the pleasant post-fuck way it normally was. She felt achy, her joints stiff, and unsatisfied, even though she’d come.
More than anything, she felt used and discarded. Like there hadn’t been a connection between them, and it made her strangely uncomfortable.
The train was empty enough that she could sit, and she curled up against the window, feet propped up. It was cold with the air conditioner blasting, and she couldn’t stop shivering, feeling chilled inside too.
Over the last two months, she and Laura had formed a connection. Laura might call it just friendship, but Sara knew there was something else to it. Laura understood her in a way that no one else did, and Sara had thought she had Laura pretty well figured out too . . . until today’s strange back-and-forth moods, and tonight’s distant, passionless sex.
The train took forever to get her back to Brooklyn, and she was exhausted by the time she stumbled up the steps to her apartment. She stripped methodically, tossing her clothes straight into the hamper, and pulled on clean panties and a loose tank top to sleep in.
She texted Nathan while lying in bed, curled beneath the duvet despite the lingering heat in the apartment. Sara: u busy?
Nathan called her back immediately. “What’s going on?”
“You didn’t have to call.”
“You haven’t texted me on a Friday or Saturday night all summer because you’ve been busy with Laura. So something must be wrong.”
Sara exhaled. “Just a rough night.”
“You break up?”
“We weren’t together in the first place,” Sara reminded him. Not yet. I was so close to telling her. “But no. I don’t know. I’m not sure what happened.”
Nathan was silent.
“Can you just talk to me until I fall asleep?”
“Yeah.” Nathan’s voice was soft. “I volunteered at the LGBT youth center with Jason today, did I tell you that? It was fantastic.” His words were low and soothing, and he talked about the kids he’d met and the way the center was laid out, how Jason clearly loved working there and how Nathan had been helping out more and more lately.
Sara finally drifted off with the phone to her ear.
